Remembering Mt. Carmel: A Century-Old Schoolhouse in Virginia

| | | |

Mt. Carmel School at Bethel Grove Church | Halifax County, VA | Built c. 1920s

This was Mt. Carmel African American School. Built in the 1920s, Mt. Carmel once stood as a beacon of hope and education for its community. It served local children until the 1940s, when school consolidation moved students to larger, more modern facilities.

Now, more than a century later, the building sits quietly, weathered by time and slowly fading into the past. With no clear future or purpose, I can’t help but wonder if it will still be standing the next time I visit.

If you have stories or family connections to this school, please comment below or email me at kelly@theforgottensouth.com so we can add to the story of this important place before it disappears.

For those who are curious if this was a Rosenwald School, it was built for Black students during the era of the Rosenwald Schools, however, it does not appear in the official Rosenwald School database.
